{"id":2054,"date":"2016-09-08T15:56:41","date_gmt":"2016-09-08T19:56:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.beautyterm.com\/?p=2054"},"modified":"2018-05-29T14:35:46","modified_gmt":"2018-05-29T18:35:46","slug":"the-case-of-a-geo-specific-beauty-brand-name-necessary-or-not","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beautyterm.com\/fr\/the-case-of-a-geo-specific-beauty-brand-name-necessary-or-not\/","title":{"rendered":"The case of a geo-specific beauty brand name: necessary or not?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The skincare brand Olay originated in South Africa in the early 1950s.\u00a0 Invented by an ex-Unilever employee, the original product went by the name of Oil of Olay, chosen as a spin on its key ingredient \u201clanolin\u201d.\u00a0 The thick pink liquid was marketed as an anti-aging &#8216;beauty fluid&#8217; and in the 1970s the range expanded to include other types of skincare products.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1980s, Oil of Olay was acquired by Proctor &amp; Gamble and in 2000 the group decided to take it global.\u00a0 So the name was modified in each country to sound \u201cpleasing to consumers\u201d: <em>Oil of Ulay<\/em> (UK and Ireland), <em>Oil of Ulan<\/em> (Australia) and <em>Oil of Olaz<\/em> (France, Italy, the Netherlands and Germany).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beautyterm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/olay-around-the-world.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2055\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beautyterm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/olay-around-the-world.jpg\" alt=\"olay-around-the-world\" width=\"530\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beautyterm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/olay-around-the-world.jpg 650w, https:\/\/beautyterm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/olay-around-the-world-300x170.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>P&amp;G eventually streamlined the brand under a global name, removed the possibly misunderstood word \u201coil\u201d and eliminated many of the name variations. According to P&amp;G, \u201cthe original name no longer fit with what women have come to expect from Olay \u2014 a light, greaseless formula.<\/p>\n<p>Today, there&#8217;s just &#8220;Olaz&#8221; (in German-speaking countries) and &#8220;Olay&#8221; (everywhere else).<\/p>\n<p>Drop us a note, if you\u2019d like to share other similar stories of geo-specific brand names in the field of beauty!
