The boutique, called The Face Place continued to get increasingly popular, attracting worldwide attention. It wasn\u2019t until 1990, when the beauty brand was expanding globally that the sisters decided to come up with a new name. Dreamed up on a flight home from Italy, Jane <strong>wanted to incorporate the word \u2018Bene\u2019 (Italian for good) into the brand\u2019s new title, and so Benefit was born<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Ciat\u00e9 <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Stands for<strong> Colour, Innovation, Aspiration, Trend, and Extraordinary<\/strong>. The acronym is a much better fit on a any label!<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Cl\u00e9 De Peau Beaut\u00e9<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A brand that originated in Japan in 1982, Cl\u00e9 de Peau Beaut\u00e9 translates as &#8220;<strong>the key to beautiful skin<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>GHD<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This leading haircare brand has probably the most fun name of all: <strong>Good Hair Day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>MAC<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>First established in a Toronto salon, MAC started off as a make-up-artist-only brand and wasn\u2019t launched to the public until 1984, once it had won over models, editors and photographers alike.\u00a0 Its meaning is simply <strong>Make-Up Artist Cosmetics.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Maybelline<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Founded in 1913, Maybelline is named after creator Thomas William\u2019s sister. According to the brand, <strong>Maybel<\/strong> used to use petroleum jelly on her lashes and brows. Chemist Williams whipped up some carbon dust to mix with the jelly for a darker shade and increased effect.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Nars<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beautyterm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/nars.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2080\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beautyterm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/nars.jpg\" alt=\"nars\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beautyterm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/nars.jpg 960w, https:\/\/beautyterm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/nars-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is the namesake of founder <strong>Fran\u00e7ois Nars<\/strong>, who launched his brand in 1995 at Barney\u2019s in New York.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Nivea<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Initially set up way back in 1890, Nivea\u2019s name is derived from the Latin \u2018<strong>nix, nivis<\/strong>\u2019, which means \u2018<strong>white as snow<\/strong>\u2019 and refers to the company\u2019s first major product, the pure white NIVEA Creme.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Nuxe<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>NUXE was started in 1989 by French entrepreneur Aliza Jabes and is a combination of the words \u201c<strong>Nature<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c<strong>Luxury<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>NYX<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Nyx (pronounced like \u2018nicks\u2019) is <strong>named after the Greek goddess of night<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Ouai<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you haven&#8217;t heard of this brand yet, you will. The hair-care line, developed by celebrity hairstylist Jen Atkin, hits shelves in 2016 \u2014 and its name is a bit of a puzzle. But that&#8217;s just the way Atkin likes it. &#8220;I wanted you to be at a lunch with your friend, and they mispronounce it and you say, &#8216;No, it&#8217;s <em>Ouai<\/em>,'&#8221; Atkin said at the launch event. (Say it with us now: &#8220;WAY.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>The actual meaning? It <strong>comes from the French word &#8220;ouais,&#8221; which is a casual way of saying &#8220;yes,&#8221; like &#8220;yep&#8221; or &#8220;yup.&#8221;<\/strong> Atkin dropped the \u201cs\u201d to make it look Hawaiian, which reflects her island upbringing. Check back with us in January to see images of the new collection.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u00a0L\u2019Or\u00e9al<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In 1907, L\u2019Or\u00e9al<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglow.com.au\/hair-and-nails\/loreal-extraordinary-oil\/\">\u00a0<\/a>founder\u00a0Eug\u00e8ne Schueller created the first hair dye formula which he called <strong>L\u2019Aur\u00e9ale<\/strong> after a fashionable hairstyle at the time called\u00a0<strong>L\u2019Aur\u00e9ole meaning \u2018halo\u2019<\/strong>. Not easy to pronounce, right? The brand was originally a dental-equipment company.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Ren<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Ren means <strong>clean<\/strong> in Swedish.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Rimmel<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Launched in 1834 by <strong>Eugene Rimmel<\/strong>, this brand was originally set up as a perfumery although its owner started creating make-up products about a year later.\u00a0 His exploits included the creation of one of the most popular and useful inventions ever: the mascara.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>SEPHORA<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A publicist for the brand explains that &#8220;Sephora&#8221; is a combination of the name &#8220;<strong>Zipporah<\/strong>,&#8221; the wife of Moses in the Book of Exodus who was renowned for her exceptional beauty, and &#8220;<strong>sephosis<\/strong>,&#8221; the Greek term attributed to beauty and vanity.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>SK-II<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The meaning behind the Japanese cult brand\u2019s name is top secret\u2026 literally. It stands for \u2018<strong>Secret Key<\/strong>\u2019 which is what the skincare line was originally going to be called as the scientists were on a quest to find the \u2018secret key\u2019 to crystal clear skin. In their research, they found the answer by surprise.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Stila<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This name is a derivative of the Italian word &#8220;<strong>stilare,<\/strong>&#8221; which means &#8220;to pen,&#8221; then A+ to you, friend.<\/p>\n<p>The name comes from the brand&#8217;s ethos: \u201cThe right makeup can turn even the simplest look into a statement as authentic as your signature.&#8221; This eyeliner&#8217;s the perfect example.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Urban Decay<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beautyterm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/urbandecay.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2083\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beautyterm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/urbandecay.jpg\" alt=\"urbandecay\" width=\"540\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beautyterm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/urbandecay.jpg 980w, https:\/\/beautyterm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/urbandecay-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a fun experiment. Google &#8220;Urban Decay&#8221; and check out the image results.<\/p>\n<p>No, you won&#8217;t find swatches of Half Baked shadow. Instead, you&#8217;ll likely see a collection of post-apocalyptic crumbling buildings. That&#8217;s because &#8220;Urban Decay&#8221; is actually defined as &#8220;the decay and deterioration of an urban area due to neglect or age<strong>.<\/strong>&#8221; A little weird for a makeup brand, no?<\/p>\n<p>UD agrees, crediting this crazy (and now wildly famous) name to its cofounder Sandy Lerner&#8217;s former husband. &#8220;Everyone was saying it had to be named<strong> &#8216;Urban&#8217; something<\/strong>. Sandy\u2019s husband, who\u2019s totally &#8216;Mr. Computer Scientist&#8217; \u2014 they invented the router and started Cisco Systems together \u2014 just said one day, &#8216;<strong>Oh, why don&#8217;t you call it Urban Decay?<\/strong>&#8216; and the name just stuck,&#8221; says cofounder Wende Zomnir.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Wen<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When launching the company, the founder took the word &#8220;<strong>new<\/strong>,&#8221; flipped it backwards, and came up with Wen.
